Reported by Swiss Correspondents VATICAN LARGELY INSTRUMENTAL (By Telegraph.—Press Association. —Copyright.) (Received This Day, 11.0 a.m.) LONDON, August 20. An Italian diplomatic mission has begun negotiations with the Allies for a*» armistice. High-ranking Italian officers, in telling this to Swiss correspondents, added that the Vatican was largely instrumental in despatching the mission, which reached Lisbon on Wednesday. A high Italian military authority said: ‘ ‘ The Italian people are aware that the peace terms will be hard, just as they are aware that the systematic destruction of Italy’s big industrial cities by the R.A.F. will continue unless the terms are accepted. ’ ’
