AIRMAN’S DEATH

SUB-LIEUTENANT J. A. BROWN. FORMER CARTERTON RESIDENT. The late Sub-Lieutenant John Atkinson Brown, the youngest son of Mr and Mrs G. Brown, of Carterton, who is reported missing, presumed killed in an aircraft accident, while serving in the Fleet Air Arm, was 22 years of age. He was a tennis player of some note, having won the Wairarapa primary school and the Wairarapa junior championships, besides being one of the senior champions of the Carterton Tennis Club. He had represented Victoria University College at shooting and tennis. Prominent- also as a Rugby player—he had played for Wairarapa and for the Carterton seniors—while in England he had taken part in games as a member of the Royal New Zealand Air Force team. Before leaving Carterton in April, 1942, to proceed to England to take up training, Sub-Lieutenant Brown had been teaching at the Carterton District High School for about 12 months. After a period in England he proceeded to Canada for further training and received his commission in April of this year. The sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be extended to his parents and other members of the family in their sad loss.
