TROOPS IN PACIFIC
9 MINISTER REBUKES FOOLISH TALK ' ABOUT “BANANA PICKERS.” WORK OF FORCES PRAISED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Saying he understood some benighted people had referred to the New Zealand forces in the Pacific scornfully as "banana pickers” and “pineapple eaters,” basking in the sunshine of tropical islands, the Minister of Armed Forces and War Co-ordination, Mr Perry, who returned last night after visiting the area, said the people who made such statements would have to live beyond their allotted span to live down their shame.
The party with the Minister on his tour included Lieutenant-General Puttick, G.0.C., New Zealand Forces. Mr Perry praised the work of the sea, air and land forces, and referred particularly to the construction work accomplished by the troops on various islands, and to their co-ordination with the American forces.
