AXIS PLANES OPERATE SINGLY DEATHS IN SOUTH COAST TOWN. MANY HOUSES DESTROYED. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, August 16. About 25 enemy bombers and fighterbombers, operating singly, carried out raids on the south coast last night. Twelve persons- were killed and many were injured in a working class district in one town. High-explosives caused considerable damage to property and many houses were destroyed.

The Berlin radio announced that the Luftwaffe attacked Portsmouth and added that high-explosives and incendiaries caused a large number of fires.
