MADE BY RUSSIANS ON THE APPROACHES TO BRYANSK COUNTER-ATTACKS REPELLED IN KHARKOV AREA. GERMANS MAKING FIERCE LAST STAND. LONDON, August 16. The Red Army, advancing through forest and swamp towards Bryansk, has pushed forward another, five to nine miles and liberated 130 mon* villages. This news is given in a Moscow communique. Earlier reports stated that the Russians had reached a point 19 miles east of Bryansk. According io a Soviet communique, Soviet troops continue successfully io develop their offensive on the Bryansk front. One place occupied is 40 miles north of Bryansk on a highway running parallel to a railway lino. Another place occupied is 8i miles west of Karachev. In the Kharkov area counter-attacks by enemy infantry and tanks have been beaten off. The Germans are making a fierce last stand round Kharkov but are still losing ground, and they have been forced to abandon much of their supplies. Today’s information shows that the Germans are not yet reconciled to immediately abandoning Kharkov, says the Stockholm correspondent of “The Times.” The Germans have managed to bring up strong reinforcements, which are now in action, in two main directions —one from Dnepropetrovsk, with the obvious task of keeping the supply or escape corridor open, and the other in the Sumy-Lebedin area. The Red Air Force has complete mastery over Kharkov. The "Red Star,” commenting on the 25th anniversary of the formation of the Red Air Force, says: “The Russian factories are providing our armies with planes which are superior to anything the Germans have.”
