KEEN BOXING
HADLOW SCHOOL TOURNEY. WINNERS OF CHAMPIONSHIPS. The keenness of the boys and the excellence of the bouts at the Hadlow School’s boxing tournament, at which there was a large attendance of parents and friends, indicated the good work accomplished by the instructors. The Earle Ridcliford Challenge Cup for the most skilful boxer was won by Richard McMaster, who also won the Harold Beetham Challenge Cup for the best middleweight. Lightweight champion was David Findlay and featherweight champion Alan Colquhoun. The headmaster, Mr A. W. Don, emphasised the value of boxing to a school. He said that the boxing they had witnessed was only one visible form of the training. The lessons the boys learned in boxing had a definite and abiding effect on their characters which were in the process of being formed at preparatory school. They became more determined and forceful, more independent of action and so gained in initiative, all of which was reflected most favourably in their confident demeanour and helped them in their eevryday life. # The judge was Mr P. Ryan and the timekeeper Mr John Lawson. ■ The bouts were: — Featherweight championship: Tuck major beat J. Tatham, A. Colquhoun beat W. Cooper; final, A. Colquhoun beat Tuck major. , Lightweight championship: J. Effingham beat P. Lawson; final, D. Findlay beat J. Effingham. Middleweight. championship: W. Cowper beat J. Buckley; B. Mclsaac beat W. Cowper; R. McMaster beat C. Godwin; final, R. McMaster beat B. Mclsaac.
