The Queen received Lady Newall and Mrs. Deneys Reitz, wife of the South African High Commissioner, on August 11 at Buckingham Palace, a London cablegram states. Lady Newall is staying at Windsor. She intends to return to New Zealand toward the end of the year. Mr and Mrs C. H. Arrow, of Pahiatua, celebrated the 66th anniversary of their wedding on Thursday. Mr H. E. Greathead. Eketahuna, who is a patient in the Masterton Hospital is making satisfactory progress. . The engagement is announced of Beth, only daughter of Mrs. H. J. Cardno, Masterton, and the late Mr Cardno, to Pit. Sgt. Quinton O. Edwards, third son of Mr and Mrs. R. W. Edwards, Birmingham. Alabama, U.S.A. The Minister of Armed Forces and War Co-ordination, the Hon W. Perry, M.L.C., and the Chief of the General Staff, Lieutenant-General E. Puttick, C. 8.. D. 5.0., have returned to Auckland from an official visit overseas. During their tour they visited various New Zealand establishments in the South Pacific.
The funeral of the late Mr P. Daly took place in Masterton this morning. Requiem Mass was celebrated at St. Patrick’s Church by the Rev Father Moore and the service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev Dr Gilhooly. There was a large attendance of mourners. Wreaths were sent by the Master ton Hospital porters, indoor staff, laundry staff and gardeners and outdoor staff. Messrs H. G. Marsh, J. J. Hunter, W. J. Whyte, V. Bradley, J. J. Andrews and R. C. Andrews were the pallbearers. The death occurred suddenly this morning of Mr Alick Madsen, of Hastwells. The late Mr Madsen, who had been a resident of the district all his life, was 55 years of age. He was a director of the Mauriceville Dairy Co. and was formerly a member of the Hastwells School Committee. He had always taken a keen interest in district affairs. He .is survived by a widow and two daughters. The funeral will take place on Monday, leaving the residence, Hastwells, following a service at 2 p.m. for the Hastwells Cemetery.
