AIR HISTORY MADE
1.500 TONS OF BOMBS DROPPED ON NUREMBERG BIG FIRES STARTED SIXTEEN BRITISH AIRCRAFT LOST. THREE NAZI NIGHT FIGHTERS DESTROYED. LONDON, August 11. The R.A.F. made bombing history last night, when it carried over 1,500 tons of high explosive and incendiary bombs to Nuremberg, in Southern Germany. It was the biggest tonnage of bombs yet flown so deep into Germany.
Big areas of fire were seen raging in the city, especially towards the end of the raid. Dornier 217 bombers were used by the enemy as night fighters. At least three German fighters were shot down. Sixteen bombers were lost.
Nuremberg has been turned into a big war production centre. Factories are clustered thickly round the old part of the city, and there are many more further south.
