GENERAL ELECTION

OAMARU SEAT FOUR CANDIDATES IN FIELD. AN UNUSUAL DEVELOPMENT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) OAMARU, This Day. The selection of Mr George Barclay, of Waimate, to contest the Oamaru seat at the general election in the interest of the Democratic Labour Party, has been announced. Mr Barclay is a member of a well known pioneering family of Banks Peninsula and is' a brother of Mr J. G. Barclay, Minister for Marketing and Agriculture. He has been farming all his life. A staunch supporter of the New Zealand Labour Party for many years, Mr Barclay resigned by way of protest when the party failed to keep its election pledges. There are now four candidates in the field for Oamaru —Mr A. H. Nordmeyer, the sitting Labour member; Mr G. P. Cuttriss, a well-known business man, who is standing as an Independent, and is sponsored by the People’s Movement; Sergeant T. R. Beatts, National Party, and Mr G. Barclay. An unusual development is that a member of .the Oamaru representation committee of the New- Zealand Labour Party will act as organiser for the Democratic Labour candidate.
