W.C.T.U.
MEETING IN MASTERTON.
COURSING ON SUNDAY DISCUSSED.
At the monthly meeting of the Masterton W.C.T.U., Miss Tankersley was in the chair. The devotions were led by Mrs Jansen. Mrs Speight read the Temperance fact as follows:—It is certain that for every man or woman in whom excessive drinking causes absolute insanity, there are 20 in whom it injures the brain, blunts the moral sense and lessens the capacity for work in lesser degrees.—Sir Thos. Clouston, lunacy expert.
It was resolved to communicate with Dominion officers in regard to the new Health Campaign which was being launched by the Government as to whether total abstinence could be included along the lines of physical fitness.
It was decided after a discussion, that a letter be sent to the W.C.T.U. Dominion Superintendent of Sabbath Observance in connection with coursing events becoming a general thing on Sundays. An article was read by Mrs Speight from the British “White Ribbon” dealing with Temperance education in schools and colleges, by means of the handbook of health containing a chapter on alcohol. The article emphasised ways and means of co-operating with teachers and lecturers for the best possible way of imparting this education and seizing opportunities through the suggested avenues of science, history, geography, physical exercises and games. The tea hostesses were Mesdames Jansen and Trevorrow.
