JUNIOR RED CROSS CONCERT AND DANCE. ("Times-Age” Special.) The Mauriceville East Hall was packed on Saturday night when the Mauriceville East School children held a concert and dance in aid of the funds 1 of the Junior Red Cross organisation, j The children are to be congratulated on their splendid effort, the entertaini inent being of a high standard and ' greatly enjoyed by the audience. Mrs C. M. Childs deserves a special word of praise for the efficient manner in which she trained the children. 1 Mrs Berney, who had for some weeks delivered lectures to the children on first aid, was introduced to the audience and was presented with a spray of flowers by Audrie Meredith , on. behalf of the school children. Miss Elliott, hon. secretary of the Masterton branch of the Red Cross Society, was ! also presented to the gathering and i gave an interesting address on matters i dealing with the Red Cross Society. 1 and appealed to all settiers of the district to become associated with the local branch of the Red Cross Society. Mesdames Childs, Jamieson and Miss ; Elliott were each presented with a 1 spray of flowers. i Mrs Childs, in thanking all present . for their support and assistance, expressed her appreciation of the services Mrs Jamieson had rendered as pianiste, making it a great deal easier for the children in connection with the staging of the concert. » Supper was supervised by an efficient ladies’ committee.
Following the concert a dance was held, the music being supplied by Mrs Jamieson. Extras were played by Misses B. Grant and Madsen, Messrs J. W. Milner and Gyde. Mr J. Baine acted as M.C. j . COUNTY COUNCIL I HOSPITAL BOARD EXPENDITURE. ' The monthly meeting of the Mau- , riceville County Council was held yesterday afternoon. The chairman, Mr E. ,W. Cheetham, presided, there being I also present Councillors A. Forsberg, A ■Gray, O. Welch, D. Bennett and J. H. 'MacDonald. j The treasurer's report, which showed a credit balance of £752 12s Bd, was ! adopted. Accounts amounting to £lO2- / :2s 3d were passed. i A letter was received from the Com. Imissioner of Transport relative to the 'issue of motor drivers’ licences free of 1 charge to members of the armed force:on leave from overseas service. It wa: resolved that licences be issued accordingly.
! The Wairarapa Hospital Board wrote i asking the council to consider a pro-
posal that the Hospital Board should borrow a sum of £15,000 for the purpose of strengtheningdhe Nurses' Home at the Masterton Hospital.
It was resolved that while the council recognised the necessity of the Nurses’ Home being renovated and restored, it opposed immediate reconstruction until such time as a clear explanation of the large increase in the estimated cost over that of last month was made.
Councillor O. Welch reported on the proceedings of the recent County Con-* ference. It was decided that the Public Works Department engineer be asked to inspect certain bridges on the MasterlonWeber highway. Reports regarding all bridges on highways in the county were submitted to the meeting by the overseer, Mr P. N. Jamieson. The overseer reported that repairs had been effected to certain bridges within the county. Prospective work was discussed and arranged for. Citizens’ Association, At, a public meeting held recently Mr J. W. Milner was elected chairman of the first Mauriceville Citizens’ Association, Mr N. Myers secretary, and Mr A. McGovern treasurer. The association will function as occasion arises. The residents will be called together to discuss and arrange social gatherings which it may be considered necessary to hold.
