AMERICAN BOMBING

OF WESTERN EUROPE INTENSIFIED HEAVILY. LAST MONTH. AIRCRAFT LOSSES MUCH AGAINST ENEMY. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, August 1. The American headquarters in Britain state that in July the Flying Fortresses of Brigadier-General Anderson’s Eighth Bomber Command dropped about 50 per cent more bombs than in June, and destroyed 75 per cent more fighters, while their own losses dropped to under 4 per cent, though very heavy opposition was sent against them. Over 3600 tons of bombs were dropped. Medium bombers of the Eighth Air Support Command hammered airfields every day in the last week of July. A conservative estimate of the number of enemy fighters destroyed by bomber's in July is given as more than 500, with 150 probably destroyed and some 275 damaged. One hundred and eight Fortresses were lost.
