DESTRUCTIVE FIRE

IN NEW SOUTH WALES COAL MINE. HEAVY LOSS AND COST INVOLVED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY, August 2. Under two huge concrete seals over the shaftheads at an important New South Wales coal mine, a destructive fire is raging at the 1200 ft. level. The fire broke out on July 24 and will entail a loss in production oi 125,000 tons of best gas coal before the mine resumes working. It is expected that it will be three months before the seals are broken to see whether the fire has been subdued.

Mine experts say it will be four months before the men are able Io go under-ground. The loss to the colliery company in trade and gear may be more than £75,000. The mine used to produce 1500 tons of coal a day. More than 150 lons of'concrete and reinforcing have been used to construct the seals which will cut off the air supply from the fire and thus gradually bring it under control. The ground round the shaftheads is still too hot to walk on in comfort in ordinary boots.
