DAMAGE BY RATS

POSITION IN MASTERTON. Rats are stated to be making their presence felt in one or two business places in Masterton. ( Steps have been taken to check the pest. In one building rats have eaten away the bottom of an outside door in order to gain an entry, but this has been stopped by placing a steel band over the woodwork. In another case, concrete put down to stop rats was : eaten through while it was still green. “The first line of attack is to build them out, and make their living conditions difficult,” said Mr T. A. Russell, Borough Health Inspector today, referring to measures taken to keep rats in check. Mr Russell said he did not know that rats were more numerous than usual, but he was keeping a close watch on the position. He added that the onus of destroying rats rested on the property-owner. Rat poison could be obtained from the borough.
