RAID ON PLOESTI
20 AMERICAN BOMBERS SHOT DOWN SOME OTHERS NOT YET BACK AT BASE. AT LEAST 51 ENEMY FIGHTERS DESTROYED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, August 2. A communique on the Ploesti raid, which has been issued by the Middle East Command, states that in a successful mass attack the Liberators went in at heights of 100 to 500 ft., and scored many direct hits on refinery installations. Heavy explosions and sheets of flame were observed, and many fires were started. Heavy opposition was encountered from fighters over the target area and on the return journey, and there was intense anti-aircraft fire. At least 51 enemy planes, including Meserschmitts and Fccke-Wulfs, were destroyed. Twenty of the bombers were shot down over the target area, and a number of others have not yet returned to the base.
The Ploesti area lies between two mountain ranges, and in addition to its natural defences the whole district is stiff with anti-aircraft defences, which made a mass attack necessary for success.
