DRIVER BURLING’S M.M. HOW IT WAS WON. (“Times-Age” Special.) The citation in connection with the awarding of the Military Medal to Driver C. J. Burling, states: “Driver C. J. Burling showed great initiative, resource and personal courage in leading and navigating ambulance convoys from Minquar Qalm to the M.D.S. He was forced to turn from the track shown to him by the presence of the enemy but succeeded in bringing to safety a large number of the wounded. He later returned to the divisional area for further wounded and passed through country which was then traversed by the enemy patrols. During the break through at night he was separated from the convoy but resourcefully found his way back to the El Alamein line. During the remainder of the campaign he has constantly shown resource and initiative and complete disregard of personal safety."
