P. AND A. SOCIETY

<s> MEETING AT CARTERTON. ARRANGEMENTS FOR SHOW (“Times-Age" Special.) Mr J. A. McLeod presided over a large attendance of members of the general committee of the Wairarapa P. and A. Society held at Carterton on Saturday. Mr McLeod referred to the deaths of Messrs W. A. Renall, A. Peters and Wm. McKenzie, and members stood for a few moments as a mark of respect. The treasurer . reported a credit balance of £329 10s 2d. The secretary reported that the roof and walls of the society’s building had been completed. It was reported that the Wellington canvas Itor prize money had been very successful. The Masterton A. and P. Society wrote congratulating the Wairarapa Society upon deciding to hold its show in October and promising assistance. The Minister of Finance wrote stating that the Government could not make an assistance grant in connection with earthquake damage. Mr Elatchford (Masterton) waited upon the society on behalf of the Young Farmers’ Club asking for permission to hold a “field day" on the second day of the Carterton show and to judge the Shorthorn dairy cattle, Romney and Southdown ewes in wool and baconer pigs in connection with their own competitions. The members would do their judging, the official judge of the classes later to comment thereon. After discussion it was decided that if the Young Farmers’ Club would arrange to do all the work in connection therewith the society would be agreeable to the proposal. It was stated that some of the official judges desired to get away when their work had been completed and that in the classes mentioned by the Young Farmers’ Club it might be necessary to appoint a substitute judge. The Romney Marsh Sheep Breeders' Association’s offer of the Wheeler Memorial Shield for the spring show was accepted. The secretary's action in writing to the military authorities in regard to damage to a chair and crockery and the loss of the society's tools and blankets was approved. Miss Molly Smart, writing from the Middle East, thanked the society for a parcel forwarded to her. She would not be returning to Carterton until her work in the Middle East had been completed. Miss McEwen, of the Wairarapa Kennel Club, wrote offering the services of members at the Wairarapa Show if transport could be arranged. The offer was received with thanks. Messrs H. C. Wcbstc-r, Carterton, and W. Shannon, Palmerston North, thanked the society for Christmas parcels. It was decided that the Wairarapa committee, Messrs Reynolds, Robinson and Hamilton, meet the Masterton Committee in regard to the district lamb competition. Two new members were elected and one resignation received.
