RETURNED SOLDIERS CIVIC RECEPTION NEXT WEEK. (“Times-Age” Special.) The following soldiers who returned to Eketahuna, will be given a civicwelcome next week: Gunner Clifford Burling, M.M. (mentioned in dispatches), Private George Cheyne, Sergeant George Jeffries, Gunner E. Jones. Driver T. F. Nielsen. Corporal Francis Ryan, Signalman Charles E. Thomson, Sapper R. McDonald, Corporal A. P. K. Ryan, Gunner W. Oldham, and Private A. T. M. Loban.
WEDDING DRYSDALE—TRAIL. A quiet wedding was celebrated at the Methodist Church, Eketahuna, when Enid Mary, eldest daughter of Mrs Matthews and the late Mr Trail, was married to L.A.C. Gordon John, only son of Mr and Mrs John Drysdale. The bride, who was escorted by her stepfather, was attired in a navy tailored costume with accessories to match, and carried a bouquet of cyclamen and winter roses. The bridesmaid was Miss V. Drysdale, who was dressed in a navy blue frock, with accessories to lone. The best man was Mr A. Butler. After the ceremony the guests were entertained at Taylor’s tea rooms, being received by Mesdames Matthews and Drysdale. The bride’s mother was dressed in black, and the bridegroom’s mother in navy. Both carried posies to tone. Among the large number present were Miss Souness, Mr H. Udy (Pongaroa‘, and Mi’ and Mrs L. Lock (Masterton*. Their future home will be in the South Island. Birthday Party at Nireaha. A most enjoyable party was held in the Nireaha Hall recently, the occasion being the celebration of the coming-of-age of Jean, only daughter of Mr and Mrs W. E. Goss. About 200 relatives and friends were present, including Mr E. E. Goss, of Levin. The music was supplied by Russell’s Orchestra. A card tournament was provided for non-dancers. Mr Cyril Goss was a capable M.C. Mr W. W. Drysdale proposed the health of the guest of honour, wishing her good luck and happiness in the future. Miss Goss suitably replied. Mr J. P. Peterson proposed the toast of Mr and Mrs Goss. The euchre tournament resulted as follows: —Men: Mr E. E. Goss. Ladies: Mrs J. Butcher Senr., Palmerston North. Personal Items. Mrs W. G. Waterreus is visiting her daughter in Auckland, and will later be the guest of her father and mother. Mr and Mrs Keane, Whangarei. The many friends of Mr E. Gyde, of Newman, will regret to learn that he is not enjoying good health.
EKETAHUNA COUNCIL monthly meeting of members. RATES STRUCK FOR YEAR. (“Times-Age” Special.! All the councillors, with the exception of Cr. H. N. Kebbel, were present at the monthly meeting of the Eketahuna County Council. Consideration was given to the estimates of receipts and expenditure for the current year. The general rate decided on was 3Ad in the £on the unimproved value, being struck as a uniform rate over the whole county. This represented an increase in the East Riding area of -fd in the £, and a reduction in the West Riding area of fd in the £, while the Alfredton Riding area remains at last year’s figure, 3fd. Expenditure for this year was estimated at the same figure as for last year, and under present day conditions it is not possible to do much other than maintenance work. The figures for work are:—Highways, £3728; roads, £5475; Stirling bridge access, £240; Mangatainoka River protection, £3OO. , Advice was deceived from the Wairarapa Hospital Board to the effect that the additional payment from the Social Security funds to the board would mean a reduction of 25 per cent on local body loans in the board's area. The treasurer reported that since the last meeting the sum of £630 14s 6d had been paid for chimney repairs, this representing a total of 70 accounts.
