COUNTY AFFAIRS
MAURICEVILLE COUNCIL WANDERING STOCK COMPLAINTS. RANGER AND POUNDKEEPER APPOINTED. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was held yesterday afternoon. The chairman, Mr E. W. Cheetham, presided, there being also present: Councillors A. Forsberg, A. Gray, O. Welch and D. Bennett. Leave of absence was granted to Councillor J. H. MacDonald. The treasurer’s report .which showed a credit balance of £298 18s 9d, was adopted. Accounts amounting to £631 17s were passed for payment. A letter was received from the Masterton County Council relative to the allocation of heavy traffic fees in the No. 10 Heavy Traffic District for the quarter ended May 31, 1943. The chairman reported on the main highway estimates for the current year, stating that allotments in this direction had been cut very considerably, and an endeavour was being made to have the allocation increased. A complaint was made to the council regarding the difficulty in driving stock past road blocks at the end of bridges in the county. The clerk was instructed to take the matter up with the authorities. The chairman stated that he would be unable to attend the N.Z. Counties’ Conference, and Councillor O. Welch was appointed to take his place as delegate. A number of complaints were received regarding wandering stock, and the clerk was instructed to notify residents of the county by advertisement that on and after August 1, 1943, prosecutions would immediately follow any offences in this direction. Mr Arthur F. Wilkin, of Mauriceville, was appointed county ranger and poundkeeper. A letter was received from the Public Works Department relative to the inspection of all bridges on main highways in the county. The county overseer, Mr P. N. Jamieson, reported that he had the matter in hand, and that the reports would be ready for the department almost immediately. The chairman reported that in connection with the Victory book drive, one box of books had been received from the Mauriceville and Hastwells Women’s Institutes, respectively. Appreciation was expressed regarding the work done by the Women’s Institutes in this direction. The clerk was instructed to hand over to the county solicitor for collection accounts in arrears for rates. The county overseer reported that repairs had been effected to certain bridges within the county. Prospective work was discussed and arranged for.
