CARTERTON

ORDER OF DRUIDS TOTARA LODGE MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The district president, Bro. W. Fryer, presided over the ordinary meeting of Totara Lodge No, 3, U.A.O.D. A vote of condolence with Bros. E., J., and H. J. McKenzie in the death of their brother William, was carried in silence. The clearance of one member to Makino Lodge, Feilding, was granted. One new benefit member was initiated into the Order and welcomed by the presiding officer in the usual manner. The secretary read the quarterly return for the period ended May 31, showing that there were 224 financial benefit members on the roll. Bro. H. Matson reported that the Carterton Friendly Societies Council had met and decided to invest £4O in the Liberty Loan. One member declared on the sick funds of the lodge. It was reported that Bro. W. Rossiter was an inmate of the Croydon Hospital. Sick pay and accounts amounting to £123 7s, were pased for payment. D.S.O. to Clergyman. The citation regarding the award of the D.S.O. to the Rev. H. G. Taylor. Chaplain to the forces, whose mother resides in Carterton, is given in a recent issue of the "N.Z.E.F. Times.’ The citation states that during an action at the Bu Ngem Road on December 15, Mr Taylor, who always insisted on travelling in a Bren carrier during an action sc that he could visit the men cn forward patrol, displayed great courage and a complete disregard for his personal safety when he went through heavy shellfire to attend to some wounded in the absence of the R.M.O. who had been wounded. He personally helped with the dressing of the wounded and supervised their evacuation. Then, still under heavy and accurate shellfire he conducted a burial service. Again, on the morning of March 23 at Point 201 while at R.H.Q., Mr Taylor was wounded in both thighs and one arm and the driver of his vehicle Was killed. He conducted a service for his driver under heavy shellfire before having his wound attended io. He refused to see the R.M.O. until ordered to do so by the commanding officer. So that he could visit the men he stayed with the B echelon instead of the A.D.S. although suffering considerable pain.

LABOUR PARTY WEEKLY CARD TOURNAMENT. The weekly card party of the Carterton branch of the New Zealand Labour Party was well attended. The prizes were won as follows: —Ladies: Mrs Howie. 1: Mrs Brown, 2. Men: Mr G. Goodin, 1; Mr A. Pauling, 2. Public Library. The work of renovating the interior of the Carterton Public Library, including the living quarters, should soon be completed by the contractor. Mr W. L. King. Personal Items; Mrs F. E. Tyler, of Lincoln Road, Carterton, is visiting Wellington. Miss I. Robertson, of Aramaho, is the guest of Mrs W. Hayden, Holloway Street. Sergt. T. Harp, who is an inmate of the Wellington Hospital, has undergone a successful operation, and is making good progress. Football, Followers of football are promised a good game on Saturday next when the Sei-vices team will play Wairarapa on the Carterton Showgrounds. The Services can field a first-class team and Wairarapa, with its best players from Carterton and the Combined team should be able to supply a strong fifteen. A curtain-raiser, a ■ third grade, Possible v. Probables game, will be played at 1.30 o’clock. On Saturday, July 24, the Bush district representatives wiil meet Wairarapa at Carterton. Trie Bush third grade team may meet Wairarapa thirds as a curtain-raiser on the same day. P. & A. Society. The monthly meeting of the general committee of the Wairarapa and East Coast P. and A. Society will be held on Saturday at 10.30 a.m. when the appointment of judges will be considered. Several members and the secretary of the Society are at present visiting Wellington, canvassing for funds towards the show prize list. Women's Division Dance. On Saturday night members of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, will hold another of their popular dances in the State Theatre. The music will be played by Mr T. Udy’s Orchestra, and the proceeds will be devoted to the Missions of the Merchant Navy. REGENT THEATRE “THE PRIME MINISTER.” An excellent drama, “The Prime Minister,” will be shown tonight, the leading roles being in the hands of John Gielgud, Will Fyfe and Diana Wynyard.
