BOROUGH AFFAIRS
FEATHERSTON COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING. ERECTION OF CREMATORIUM FAVOURED. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Featherston Borough Council there were present the Mayor (Mr J. W. Card) and Councillors G. A. Tarrier, W. J. Biston, C. C. Kenward, B. B. Donald, R. R. P. Hardy and T. G. Hardie. Apologies for absence were received from Councillors H. W. Cundy, C. R. Skipage and S. P. Batcheler. The treasurer reported the following bank balances: District fund a/c, cr. £559 19s; cemetery a/c, cr. £ll4 9s 2d; mayor's relief fund a/c, cr. £74 14s 9d; domain a/c. cr. £44 16s 3d; water supply loan 1936, cr. £47 Is 3d; library a/c. cr. £9 Is Id.
The Featherston County Council wrote asking if the council were in favour of the erection of a crematorium at some central town within the No. 10 M.H. District Council area. A letter was also received from the same council advising of the passing of a resolution authorising the building of a crematorium on a site to be selected in Masterton and seeking the patronage from other local bodies’of the Wairarapa. It was decided to fall in with the Masterton Borough Councils pro posal. The Post and Telegraph Department wrote asking the councl to seal the footpath in front of the old Post Office and charge the same to the department. It was decided to do as re--quested. The Fire Brigade wrote asking that the chimney at the fire station be rebuilt. The matter was left to the buildings committee to attend to.
The Miniature Rifle Club wrote asking to be allowed the use of the gymnasium on Monday of each week in which to hold their shooting. The request was granted. The Masterton County Council wrote enclosing a cheque for £4l 13s 6d as the allocation for the quarter ended May 31. The Wairarapa Rugby Union wrote seeking permission to charge for admission to matches at the ground during the present season. The request was granted. The Patriotic dance committee wrote expressing thanks for the free use of the Town Hall.
It was reported that two pianos had been sold at a satisfactory figure to a Wellington firm.
