OBITUARY
MR WILLIAM EAGLE. The death occurred at Greytown yesterday of Mr William Eagle, a well known resident of the Wairarapa, at the age of 72 years. In his younger days he was a prominent footballer and cricketer. Over fifty years ago he played for the Carterton seniors and as a youth represented Wairarapa against Warbrick’s Maori team and in all the representative games over a long period of years, having been an outstanding forward 6ft tall and weighing over 14 stone. He was a good batsman and for many years played for the old Carlton seniors at Masterton, under the captaincy of the late Mr “Ted” Welch, and which won the Wairarapa Thursday Cricket Association's championship on several occasions. He had resided in recent years at Eketahuna. He leaves a widow and three sons, Messrs Len, Reg and Horrie (overseas). One son, Edward, died at Carterton some years ago. The late Mr Eagle was born in Carterton where his parents were old and highly respected residents. Of a genial disposition he had a large circle of friends who will learn of his death with feelings of deep regret. He formerly resided at the Taueru and at Masterton for some years. The funeral will take place at Eketahuna.
