CARTERTON COUNCIL RATES STRUCK FOR YEAR. ERECTION OF CREMATORIUM FAVOURED. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, presided over the monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council last even; ing. There were present: Councillors E. McKenzie, W. A. Hart. H. Mortenson, C. E. Stevens, C. J. DeLacey, Howard E. Jackson and O. W. Wolters. The treasurer’s statement showed, a credit balance of £4OO in the district fund account and £363 Ils 3d in the gasworks account at the bank. The district fund account also had a credit in the Post Office Savings Bank of £1225 Ils 4d.

A resolution, was passed striking a rate for the current year of 16d in the £. The manager of the Regent Theatre wrote asking permission to screen pictures on Christmas night. The request was granted subject to usual conditions. It was resolved to approve of the Masterion Borough Council’s proposal to erect a crematorium.

A balance sheet from the Carterton Volunteer Fire Brigade showed a credit balance for the first time in 20 years. It was decided to approve of the re commendation of the works committee that the council purchase the necessary piping and fittings for the installation of a water main on the new street, which is to be formed from Belvedere Street to Broadway The works committee recommended that plans and specifications be obtained for the new fire station to be erected in the proposed nfcw street, and that Mr H. C. Morton, of Wellington, be asked to undertake the work. The recommendation was adopted. Alton gements were made for the works committee and Fire Brigade to meet Mr Morton on the site on Thursday, July 8 at 5 o’clock. It was resolved that outstanding accounts in connection with the erection of chimneys damaged during the earthquake 12 months ago, be issued finally and a settlement asked for.

Councillor Mortenson was elected as a member of the Carter Home committee in place of Councillor Jackson, resigned. It was resolved that owners of sections 'in Wyndham and Kent streets be asked .to remove broom and gorse thereon.
