CARTERTON

LIBERTY LOAN INVESTMENT BY GAS COMMITTEE. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Carterton gasworks committee last evening decided to invest £lOO in the Third Liberty Loan. BIBLE SOCIETY ANNUAL MEETING. The Carterton branch of the British and Foreign Bible Society recently held its annual meeting.

The Rev. W. J. Couling read a letter of thanks from the Dominion Secretary for donations received. The following officers were elected for the year: —President, the Rev. R. Grice; vice-presidents, Mesdames Every, Peters, Tyler, Udy, the Revs. W. J. Couling, W. F. Stent and Captain Herring; hon. secretary, Miss L. H. Edwards. Mrs Violet Wakelin, organising secretary from 'Wellington, attended the meeting and thanked the collectors for their good work last year. Mrs Wakelin referred to the gift of testaments to the armed forces throughout the British Empire. Miss Moncrioff offered her services as an additional collector. Afternoon tea was served.

During her stay in Carterton. Mrs Wakelin was the guest of the Misses Edwards, Park Road.

Personal Items.

Mr and Mrs J. Nunn, Pukio, and Mr and Mrs A. Elkins, Parkvale, have left to spend a holiday at Wanganui, New Plymouth and Napier. .The death occurred last evening at her residence, Broadway, of a respected resident, Mrs Olive Elizabeth McKenzie. She is survived by her husband and three children. ‘The son is a member of the Air Force. The funeral will leave her late residence, Broadway. Carterton, on Thursday, after a service commencing at 2 p.m., for the Masterton Cemetery.

In the Dalefield Hall on Monday evening, the settlers of the district entertained Mr and Mrs C. V. Zillwood, who have disposed of their farm. The time was taken up with dancing, the music for which was supplied by Mrs V. J. Ashton’s Orchestra. An extra was played by Mrs H. J. Bain. Mr W. Press acted as M.C. Mr P. J. Reid presented Mr and Mrs Zillwood, on behalf of the settlers, with a beautiful eiderdown quilt, referring in eulogistic terms to their personal qualities. Mr Zillwood suitably returned thanks and stated that Mrs Zillwood and himself were going to live in Carterton. Supper was provided by the ladies of the district. W.D.F.U. Dance. On Saturday evening a dance under the auspices of the W.D.F.U. will be held in the State Theatre, Carterion. Udy’s Orchestra will provide the music. REGENT THEATRE “THE REAL GLORY.” Tonight the excellent drama, “The Real Glory,” will be finally shown, in which Gary Cooper, David Niven and Andrea Leeds are featured.
