TELEPHONE DIRECTORY
NEW BOOK NOT FAVOURED.
BOROUGH COUNCIL'S ATTITUDE
A letter from the Pahiatua Chamber of Commerce asking for support of its action in requesting the Post and Telegraph Department to publish a new telephone book was received at last night’s meeting of the Masterton Borough Council. It was decided to advise the Chamber that the Council did not favour the issue of a new book but favoured the printing of a leaf containing _ the names of new subscribers for addition to the present books. The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, said people had little to complain about. He moved and Councillor H. E. Gardner seconded a motion that the Pahiatua Chamber of Commerce be written to and advised that it was not the council’s opinion that a new telephone book should be printed. Councillor W. Kemp said new subscribers had a complaint. They paid fees, which were substantial to a man in a small way. He suggested a leaf as an addition to the present books. The cost would not amount to much. He moved as an amendment that the council add to Mr Jordans motion that the council favoured the printing of an additional leaf containing the names of new subscribers. Councillor G. W. Morice said it was not too much to ask for. The amount of the paper required in the printing of an additional leaf would be infinitesimal compared with the cost of a new book. The amendment was put to the meeting and was carried.
