DAMAGED HALLS

REPAIRS NOT YET POSSIBLE.

BOROUGH COUNCIL’S POSITION

In reply to a letter before the Masterton Borough Council last night it was decided to advise the Wairarapa Trades Council that owing to the diversion of labour and material to defence and essential works it was not yet possible to restore and strengthen the public halls damaged by earthquake. For that reason, it was added, the council could not provide the facilities asked for.

Referring to the lack of a suitable hall in Masterton, Councillor H. E. Gardner said the council was losing a good deal of revenue and he hoped that the work would be gone on with as a first job. Councillor W. Kemp: “Hear, hear.” The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, said all councillors agreed that a hall was urgently needed.
