CHUNGKING, June 21. Executing a pincer movement against the Japanese in the coastal region of the Kwangtung Province, north-west of Canton, Chinese troops inflicted several hundred casualties and restored their original positions. Fighting is also reported west of Swatow, where the Japanese have launched a new offensive.

Observers said that in both areas the Japanese were testing Chinese strength, dispersing possible concentrations and looting everything of value. The Chinese Ministry of Agriculture disclosed that land cultivation in Free China had increased by seven million acres since the beginning of 1943. The production of foodstuffs in 1942 increased by 48 million piculs over that of 1941.
