HEROIC MALTA
VISIT ED BY KING GEORGE
TREMENDOUS POPULAR OVATION.
MARSHAL'S BATON PRESENTED TO LORD GORT.
LONDON, June 21. The King visited Malta yesterday. Correspondents say he received a great welcome from the people.
He visited the George Cross island in a British cruiser, with an escort of four destroyers, 16 years to the day since, as Duke of York, he visited the island. The dramatic news that the King was coming was given out at 5 o’clock in the morning, three hours before he was due to arrive. When he appeared on a balcony at Valetta, he was rousingly cheered by 100,000 people.
The highlight of his visit, was the presentation of a field marshal’s baton to the Governor, Lord Gort.
