LEAGUE OF MOTHERS
MEETING IN MASTERTON. MERCANTILE MARINE’S GREAT WORK. The monthly meeting of the Masterton League of Mothers was held in Knox Hall yesterday afternoon, when Mrs L. B. Maunsell presided over a good attendance of members and visitors. After welcoming those present, Mrs Maunsell thanked the members for their many expressions of sympathy with her in her recent sorrow. It was announced that nominations for officers must be handed in by the July meeting. Mrs Traynor sang a delightful solo, and the choir gave two items. Mrs Maunsell introduced the Rev. B. J. Williams, chaplain of the Mission to Seamen, Wellington, who spoke on the men of the Navy and their needs. “No words of mine can convey what we owe to the men of the sea,” said Mr Williams, “for the bitter warfare now being waged was a war of supplies, and no matter what the odds, the ships must go through.” Mr Williams went on to relate very graphically some stirring tales of the sea, and of great hardships endured with almost superhuman courage. Nothing that could be done for these men when they reached port was too much or too good for them, said Mr Williams, who urged his listeners to keep on helping the Mission as they had done in the past. Boxes of cakes, biscuits, books, magazines, musical instruments, indoor and outdoor games, gramophones and records are urgently appealed for. In returning thanks to Mr Williams for his address, Mrs Maunsell remarked that this work for the men of the sea must commend itself to all people. Tea hostesses were Mesdames Gaskin, W. Hope, Lee, Keltie, Blackwood and L. Hunter.
