CARD ENTERTAINMENT HELD BY LABOUR PARTY. i (“Times-Age” Special.) At a card tournament held by the Labour Party, there was a good attendance. The prizes were won as follows: —Ladies: Mrs Pauling 1, Mrs Edwards 2. Men’s section: Mr G. Challis 1, Mrs Lenihan 2. PLUNKET SOCIETY ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Carterion branch of the Plunket Society was held yesterday afternoon. The report and balance sheet were read and adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mrs N. R. Armstrong; vice-presidents,, Mesdames W. H. Booth, F. Court, H. E. Jackson. J. Steel and J. Udy; committee, Mesdames Candy, Dyer, Barrett, Couling, Gryce, Robinson and Montgomery; advisory board, Messrs W. Howard Booth, W. J. Candy, J. Steel, J. A. C. Tucker, Rev W. F. Stent and Dr Wells; hon secretary and treasurer, Mrs Trapp; hon auditor, Mr H. Mortenson. Mrs Wells did not seek re-election as president.
Various matters in connection with the branch were discussed and the serving of afternoon tea concluded the meeting. A committee meeting was held later. The nurse’s report for May stated inter alia:—New cases, 6 visits to homes, old cases 69, new cases 10, pre-school children 26; visits to rooms, adults 79, babies 66. pre-school children 29. DRUIDS’ LODGE INSTALLATION MEETING. In the presence of visitors from Stonehenge Lodge (Masterton), the newly elected officers of Totara Lodge No. 3 were installed by the District President, Bro W. Fryer, at the meeting held last night, Arch Druid Bro H. J. Bassett being the presiding officer. One member gave notice of his marriage and forwarded the usual declaration of his wife.
Past Secretary Bro. E. McKenzie was congratulated by Lodge members on his election as a life member of the New Zealand Rugby Football Union in recognition of the services rendered by him over a long period. Bro McKenzie thanked the members for the complimentary remarks made. P.D.P. Bro Austin Reid thanked the Lodge for congratulations extended to him on his election as chairman of the Wairarapa South County Council. Bro Reid remarked that the experience gained by him while passing through the chairs of office in Totara Lodge had been a wonderful help to him in various ways.
Word was received from Bro Gift Bain, on active service in New Caledonia, saying that he was well. One proposal for membership was received. The initiation ceremony will take place at the next lodge night. Sick pay and accounts amounting to £8 11s 8d were passed for payment, after which the lodge adjourned, and the visitors were entertained at supper before leaving for home. LfST u -a.» » k •»«..
LIBERTY LOAN BOND WAGON VISITS CARTERTON The Bond Wagon, a five-ton Army truck, pulled up in Broadway this morning. A programme of music was rendered and during the morning several cheques for fair amounts were handed into the authorities on the wagon. The total takings for six days in Carterton is £5901 19s. The shops closed in Carterton at 10.30 o’clock for a short period when the Mayor, from the wagon platform, introduced those connected with the Bond Wagon. Carterton was the first town of call after leaving Wellington. Residents Alarmed. Residents in Kent and Wyndham Streets, Carterton, became alarmed on Sunday evening, between 9.30 and 10 o’clock, when six shots were heard, apparently from a firearm. The cause, of the shooting has not been ascertained, but it is understood that the police have the matter in hand. Boy Scouts’ Card Party. The Clareville Boy Scout Committee held a very successful card tourney in the Clareville Hall, when the prizes were won as follows: —Ladies: Mrs Thompson 1, Mrs Lister 2. Men’s section: Miss G. Rayner 1, Miss Johns 2. Personal Items. Mr Jensen, of Hauraki Plains, who had been on a visit to his mother, Mrs A. Tinsley, Kent Street, returned home yesterday. Mrs Burling, of Pirinoa, is a visitor to Carterton, and is staying with her mother, Mrs A. Tinsley, Kent Street. Mr H. J. McKenzie left this morning on his annual holiday. He will visit Wellington later. A Horse Shot. Mr C. E. Miller, of Carrington, inserts a warning notice in today’s paper notifying that all persons found trespassing on his property at Carrington will be prosecuted. Mr Miller, on going over his property on Thursday last, found his farm horse dead. The animal was examined, and it was found that a bullet had entered a shoulder, causing the animal’s death. Mr Miller’s
loss is a very serious one. as the horse was an all-round farm animal valued at £5O. REGENT THEATRE “SHINING VICTORY.” A most interesting drama, “Shining Victory,” written, by A. J. Cronin, will be shown tonight. The chief characters are portrayed by James Stephenson, Geraldine Fitzgerald and Donald Crisp. A March of Time is also on the programme.
