GREYTOWN
LEAGUE OF MOTHERS INTERESTING ADDRESS ON TREES (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the League of Mothers was held in the Parish Hall yesterday afternoon when Mrs Smallwood presided over a very good attendance of members. A letter of thanks was received from the Mission to Seamen for cakes sent last month by League members. Lady Alice Fergusson, of Scotland, wrote acknowledging the Christmas cake received by her from the Greytown branch. Mrs Coleman gave the thought for the month. The next meeting is to be a “member’s afternoon.” The Rev J. C. Abbott gave a very interesting talk on “Trees.” He especially referred to the “cedar of Lebanon” and the kauri and totara of New Zealand. He said that the trees were very much like human beings They seemed to have ways of expressing themselves. He referred to the Maoris and the uses they made of the various trees.
Mrs Smallwood thanked Mr Abbott for his address.
Mrs Eccles sang “Trees” and “The Plane Tree.” The choir rendered two items and Mrs Farley sang “I Hear a Forest Praying” and “Tell Talc Specks.” The hostesses were Mesdames W. J. Knell, A. H. Bull, A. Ross and T. Orr. Personal items. Misses Best (2), M. Eccles, D. Rees and J. Horton were Wellington visitors to Greytown during the weekend. Mrs J. Brooking, of West Street, is spending a few days in Wellington. TOWN HALL DOUBLE PROGRAMME.
There will be a double feature programme tomorrow night. “Powder Town” is a thrilling drama with Victor McLaglen, Edmund O’Brien, June Havoc and Dorothy Lovett on the chief roles. “Eyes of the Underworld” is a startling picture featuring Lon Chaney and Richard Dix.
