AT FULL PRESSURE
AIR ATTACKS ON ITALY & ISLANDS JUNKERS PLANES DESTROYED ON GROUND. FLYING FORTRESSES AGAIN RAID FOGGIA. LONDON, June 1. The Italian mainland has been attacked for the third time in lour days, this time by Flying Fortresses, which yesterday raided Foggia. They concentrated their attack on the big airfield, but also bombed the railway station and marshalling yards. On the airfield at. least 25 Junkers 88s were caught on the ground. A few minutes after the bombs went down the Axis aircraft were well alight. The Italians admit considerable damage.
A number of enemy fighters came up. but they met with no more success than on any previous occasion and the Fortresses attacked their objectives. Two of the fighters were destroyed.
Other Allied aircraft continued their assault against Pantelleria and Sardinia. Altogether four Axis aircraft were shot down during the day. The Allies lost two.
HITS SCORED ON SMALL ENEMY VESSELS IN GREEK WATERS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.45 a.m.) RUGBY, June 1. A Middle East air communique states: “On Sunday long-range fighters off the west coast of Greece attacked a small merchant vessel, which was left with her deck cargo blazing. A small sailing vessel was attacked off the south coast of the Thermia Islands, many hits being scored with cannon. All our aircraft returned.”
