RECORD MONTH
FOR AMERICAN EIGHTH AIR FORCE NINE MAJOR ATTACKS MADE 351 GERMAN FIGHTERS DESTROYED. AGAINST LOSS OF 81 AIRCRAFT. LONDON, May 31. May lias been a record month for the United States Eighth Air Force. During the month it made nine major attacks against 20 vital targets, all in daylight. In these attacks Fortresses and Liberators dropped 70 per cent more bombs by weight than in any previous month. They shot down 351 German fighters, more than double the total in any previous month. Medium bombers and new high altitude fighters were used for the first time and altogether 2000 sorties were made in four weeks. Seventy-two bombers and nine fighters are missing from the month's operations. The nine major attacks mentioned were made by heavy bombers against vital enemy targets in Germany, Holland, Belgium and France. Also during May American medium bombers were first used in Europe, as well as the newest American highaltitude fighter, the P 47 Thunderbolt. Over 2,000 sorties were made during the month.
