CHINESE SUCCESS

IN YANGTSE RIVER BATTLE

FIVE JAPANESE DIVISIONS VIRTUALLY SURROUNDED. POWERFUL BOMBING ATTACK ON ICHANG. LONDON, May 31. Chinese forces, according to a special communique issued from Chungking; have virtually surrounded live Japanese divisions, in the vicinity of Ichang, on the Yangtse River. The encirclement is the outcome of a big Chinese counter-offensive on this front.

It is officially announced in Chungking that the Chinese on the central front have recaptured the town of Yuaungkwan, and have killed 2000 Japanese and captured a huge quantity of booty in the operation. The recapture of this town, which has been described as the gate to Chungking, eliminates the main threat against the Chinese capital. The Chinese National Military Council stated that the Chinese success marked a turning-point of the battle in the Yangtse Valley.

It is also announced that Allied bombers, escorted by Chinese fighters, raided Ichang today. At least 23 Japanese aircraft were shot down in dog fights and eight others probably were destroyed.

In Burma American and R.A.F. planes had another busy day, attacking Japanese targets over a wide area.
