FRENCH NAVAL SQUADRON AT ALEXANDRIA NEWS CONFIRMED IN LONDON. SHIPS IDLE SINCE 1940. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, May 31. The French naval squadron which has been immobilised at Alexandria since the armistice in 1940 has joined the United Nations. This was confirmed today in London. When last listed the French ships comprised the 22,000-ton battleship Lorraine, four cruisers, three destroyers, and one submarine. The breechblocks of the ships’ guns were removed in July, 1940. The Lorraine was built at St. Nazaire and completed in 1916, with an armament including 13.4 in. guns. She was stated before the outbreak of this war to be no longer on the effective list. The overwhelming majority of effective French warships are now manned by Fighting French and Giraudists, and other important units are in American repair yards. Those still under the German gaze are mainly the scuttled warships at Toulon and only a weak force in a serviceable condition.
