NAME THAT WILL LIVE
CAPTAIN JOHN WALLACE LINTON THREE YEARS OF SUBMARINE WARFARE. DEEDS THAT WON VICTORIA CROSS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.45 a.m.) RUGBY, May 25. The name of Captain John Wallace Linton, who has been awarded the Victoria Cross, will live in British submarine annals, not only as commanding officer first of H.M.S. Pandora and then of H.M.S. Turbulent, but also for his inspiring leadership throughout three years of intensive activity in the Mediterranean. While in command of the Turbulent, Captain Linton sank 100,000 tons of shipping, including a cruiser, destroyer and U-boat. In his last year he spent 254 days at sea, submerged for nearly half the time, and his ship was hunted thirteen times and had 250 depth charges aimed at her. A total of sixteen V.C.’s have been awarded to personnel of the Royal Navy since the outbreak of war, five of them to personnel in submarines.
