IN SERVICE AGAIN

ALL BUT FIVE WARSHIPS. DAMAGED IN PEARL HARBOUR ATTACK. (By Telegraph—Pi’ess Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, May 23. Of the 19 warships which were damaged at Pearl Harbour on December 7, 1941, 14 have left Hawaii under their own power.

The five which remain are the battleships Arizona and Oklahoma, the tar-get-ship Utah and the destroyers Cassin and Downes, says the Pearl Harbour correspondent of the “New York Times.” The battleships Nevada, California and West Virginia, which rested in the channel mud when the Japanese planes left, are now refloated and are better ships than before. Furthermore, 50 per cent of the machinery of the Cassin and Downes and practically all their guns have been reclaimed, and also the gun batteries of the Arizona. Even the ammunition from several of the stricken ships has been found fit for use.

These facts, the correspondent says, were revealed by Rear-Admiral William Furlong, the commandant of the navy yard, who added that the Oklahoma had been righted and would also be sent out under her own power.
