CARTERTON

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE BIRTHRDAY PARTY. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mrs Hughes presided over the fourth birthday party of the Matarawa-Dalefield Women’s Institute held in the Dalefield Hall on Wednesday afternoon. There was a large attendance of members. The Drama Circle presented the afternoon's entertainment and provided a most enjoyable programme. The competitions for the month were won by the following:—Seniors (gunners’ gloves): Mrs E. I. Smith, 1; Mrs L. Rogers, 2; Mrs O. Brazendale, 3. Flowers (best bloom): Mrs A. Goodin, 1; Mrs W. Knowles, 2; Mrs G. Brazendale, 3. Juniors (gunners’ gloves): Miss B. Sadler, 1; Miss J. Conwell, 2; Miss A. Hodder, 3. Flowers (best bloom): Miss J. Goodin, 1; Miss N. Conwell, 2; Miss B. Sadler, 3. Afternoon tea was served and the beautiful birthday cake was cut by Mrs Neilson, a past president. ANNUAL BALL A BRILLIANT SUCCESS. The headmaster, Mr W. Martin and his teaching staff last evening were very pleased at the brilliant success of the Carterton School’s annual fancy dress ball. About 400 children were in fancy costumes which showed that their parents had spared neither time nor expense in their efforts to make the function a bright and gay one. The dancing of the children from the tiny tots to those in the higher standards was excellent and was watched by a crowded hall. Many and varied were the fancy dresses worn. The music for the children’s dancing was provided by a gramophone kindly lent by Mr Kemp Goodin and manipulated by Mr McWhisker, who announced each dance from a loud speaker. Winter Vacation. The state schools in the Wellington district broke up yesterday for their winter vacation. Church Parades. At Thursday night’s meeting of the Carterton Band the question of again inaugurating church parades was considered. The matter was left to the incoming committee to consider. Parcel Evening. In honour of the approaching marriage of Miss Eileen Pinfold a parcel evening will be held in the Masonic Hall, Carterton, on Wednesday evening next. Good music and supper are assured. Funeral. The funeral of the late Mrs M. L. Roigard, of 25 Campbell Terrace, Petone, and late of Carterton, took place at the Karori Cemetery on Saturday last. There was a large attendance of mourners and many beautiful wreaths were received. The late Mrs Roigard leaves a widower and a family of six, Mrs Percy Oliver (Whiteman’s Valley), Mrs Earl Morris (Eketahuna), Miss Pearl Roigard (Petone), and Messrs Clifford (Greytown), Richard (overseas), and Kenneth Roigard (prisoner of war). Snow on Ranges. The Tarawa ranges have a fairly heavy coating of snow. Nursing Classes. ' The Carterton branch of the New Zealand Red Cross Society will commence classes in Home Nursing on Monday next in the Dalefield Dairy Co’s, building. Members and intending members are asked to attend. Mother’s Day Service. Major and Mrs Dick are to conduct a Mother’s Day service at the Salvation Army tomorrow at 7 p.m. REGENT THEATRE “THE BRIDE CAME C.0.D.” Bette Davis, in a comedy role with James Cagney, is featured in “The Bride Came C.0.D.,” at the Regent. It is a picture full of laughs. The serial, “The Adventures of Smilin’ Jack,” will also be shown.
