NEUTRAL EIRE
CONFIDENT OF ASSISTANCE IF ATTACKED. ACCORDING TO MINISTER IN WASHINGTON. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) BOSTON, May 6. “If Erie abandoned her neutrality it would mean the destruction of the Irish race,” said Mr Robert Brennan, the Irish Minister to Washington, in a statement to the Press “I can think of no price we could receive which would compensate us for going into the war. We have in our hands now the power to remedy everything except the partition.”
Mr Brennan denied that Erie was neutral because she hated Britain. Asked what Eirie would do if she were attacked by Germany, Mr Brennan replied: “We would put up a hell of a fight.” When asked if he thought the Allies would come to Ireland’s aid if she was attacked, he replied: “Naturally. It would be in their own interest to do so.’
Asked if Eirie expected anything at the peace table, he replied: “Oh, yes, We expect a just peace which will benefit the entire world.” Mr Brennan acknowledged that if Britain were defeated the Irish economy would worsen.
