CARTERTON
ST. MARK’S CHURCH ANNUAL MEETING OF PARISHIONERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a good attendance at the annual meeting of parishioners of St. Marks Anglican Church in the Parish Hall last night. The Rev. W. F. Stent, vicar of the parish, presided. The chairman read a very comprehensive report of the activities of the church during the past twelve months. He referred to the excellent work of the Sunday School teachers, the Bible Class, the Women’s Guild, etc., all of whom received hearty votes of thanks. The report dealt with the damage caused by the earthquakes in June and August of last year, most of which had been repaired. Mr S. T. Rooney read a report on Sunday School work and referred to the marked increase in the number of pupils attending, the total being over 70.
A detailed account of the balance sheet was given by the chairman, which showed marked increases in all the funds. The Ladies’ Guild, of which Mrs L. J. Harding was secretary, had been instrumental in raising £233 during the year—a large increase over previous years. Donations to the general church fund also showed a big increase on previous years, £254 having been given. The credit balance at March 31 was £9l 16s 4d. The report and balance sheet were read and adopted.
The vicar said the church was in a better position financially than it had been since he was appointed to the parish some years ago. The report and balance sheet were adopted.
The election of officers resulted as follows: —Vicar’s warden, Mr W. G. Thomas; church warden, Mr W. C. M. Sorensen; vestrymen, Messrs M. Ardrey, J. Court, G. H. Deller, J. Eaton, C. K. Goodin, D. J. Irwin, P. Millichamp, J. G. Mitchell, Geo. Reading, S. T. Rooney; auditor, Mr P. A. Cole. Votes of thanks were passed to Mr and Mrs W. F. Stent, the members of the Ladies Guild, and all who had in any way assisted the church. Supper was provided at the conclusion of the meeting. SCHOOL AFFAIRS MEETING OF COMMITTEE. Mr H. J. McKenzie presided over the monthly meeting of the Carterton District High School Committee last evening. There were also present: Messrs W. E. Knowles, P. L. Beere, G. L. Chatwin, F. Denbee, C. K. Goodin, G. Stark, and the headmaster, Mr W. Martin. An apology for absence was received from Air R. Williams. The treasurer reported that the general account was in credit to the extent of £lO7 10s Id.
The Wellington Education Board forwarded £22 13s Id for incidental expenses.
The Wellington Education Board wrote stating that an officer of the Board would inspect the school fence and submit a report to the Board. The headmasters’ report showed that there were 397 children in the primary classes, and 44 in the secondary division. Miss Wylie had been appointed to the school staff. The sum of £3 2s 6d had been contributed by the school children for an Anzac Day wreath. Mrs Hodder had made the wreath free of charge, and the £3 2s 6d had been donated to the soldiers’ parcels fund. It was reported that the children’s annual fancy dress ball would be held on Friday, and that the members of the school committee would assist at the gathering. The chairman reported that the annual meeting of the Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Club would be held on Friday. It was resolved that Messrs H. J. McKenzie, F. Denbee and R. Williams attend as delegates. An application is to be made to the Wellington Education Board for a wash basin for the school staff room in the secondary department. It was decided that in future committee meetings be held on the first Monday in each month. Personal Items. Brigadier Charles Gray, Divisional Commander of the Wellington Division of the Salvation Army, will arrive in Carterton tomorrow. He will be accompanied by Mrs Gray, and while in Carterton will be the guest of Mr and Mrs Josiah Udy, of Rexwood Street. The Brigadier will deliver the address at the united intercession service which is to be held in the Salvation Army Hall at 7 p.m. At 8.15 p.m. he will conduct a public meeting in the Salvation Army Hall. In the afternoon Mrs Brigadier Gray will speak at a special meeting for women at the Salvation Army Hall. Mr T. Quinn, Carterton, has been advised that his brother, Staff-Sgt. Quinn, has been wounded in the fighting in Africa. Schoolboy Injured. A Carterton schoolboy named Rofe met with an accident at school yesterday afternoon. He was running along the concrete at the school when he fell heavily and severely gashed his left leg. He was taken to Dr. W. J. C. Wells for treatment and it was found necessary to insert eleven stitches in the wound. Druids’ Lodge. 1 Arch. Druid Bro. H. J. Bassett presided over the meeting of Totara Lodge No. 3, U.A.0.D., held last night. A vote of condolence was passed with Bro, E. Matson in the death of his brother. It was reported that Bro. John Gray, of Parkvale, was in the Croydon Hospital suffering from severe burns as the result of .an accident vzith a flamethrower. Bro. Rupert Reid, of Clareville, it was stated, was in the Masterton Hospital receiving treatment and making good progress. The Arch. Druid thanked members for attendance at the Soldiers’ Memorial on Anzac Day when the lodge wreath of memory was laid. Bro. Giff. Bain notified that he had gone overseas on active service. Bros. Les.
