BATTLE HONOURS

NEW ZEALAND FIGHTING FORCES. PRIME MINISTER’S TRIBUTE. ■ (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This' Day. “Among the many achievements of New Zealand in this war, the deeds of our division with the Eighth Army in the Middle East stand out most conspicuously,” said the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, in presenting the Parliamentary report to the annual conference of the New Zealand Labour Party. “Our suspense as fortunes swayed at Sidi Rezegh and El Alamein turned to rejoicing when oui" men swept across North Africa, and our feelings rose to exultation when they routed Rommel at El Hamma. The welfare of our men overseas is our constant care, and it was with much satisfaction that recently we were able to send the Minister of Defence, Mr Jones, to the Middle East and to Great Britain to gain first-hand knowledge of their conditions and needs.

“New Zealand sailors and airmen are also winning honour for themselves and their country by gallant conduct in every sphere of the war. Many of our men have sacrificed themselves for our freedom. We mourn them and pray that we may be worthy inheritors of the life and liberty which they are so dearly buying for us.”
