WAR RISK BONUS

CANADA GRANTS TAXATION EXEMPTION. ~i .. ), OTTAWA, April 9. The war risk bonus paid to merchant seamen is to be exempt from taxation. Government, amendments to the Budget resolutions, notice of which has been given in the Canadian House of Commons, propose to exempt from taxable income (1) the amount of the war risk bonus and (2) the value of board and lodging received by men eligible for this bonus while they are at sea.

The war risk bonus of 44.50 dollars a month is paid to crews of vessels operating in waters which are defined as involving war risk. The amendments, it is expected, are likely to result in a large proportion of seamen being exempt from tax.
