SAVING EXPECTED

HOSPITAL LOAN PROPOSAL PAYMENT OUT OF REVENUE. EXPLANATION BY CHAIRMAN AND SECRETARY. “The ratepayers have the money in their pockets at present and there is a chance that in the period following the war they may not have so much money,” observed Mr H. H. Mawley, chairman of the Wairarapa Hospital Board at yesterday afternoon’s meeting of the board when it was decided to pay the amount of £9,293 out of revenue for the erection of huts for nurses and towards the cost of earthquake repairs, thus reducing a loan proposal from £45,000 to £36,000. Mr Mawley said it was a good sound business proposition. The managing-secretary, Mr Norman Lee, submitted a report which set out in detail the saving that would be effected by this proposal. If the sum of £9,293 was included in maintenance estimates for the ensuing year’ it would mean: —(1) That maintenance levies in comparison with levies for 1942-1943 would not be increased. They would be reduced by £1,682. (2) That the rate of subsidy would be increased from 14s 7|d to 16s 5d in the £1 of maintenance levy. (3) That the proposed loan would be reduced from £45,000 to £36,000. (4) That over a period of 20 years the board would not be called upon to levy the greater proportion of interest on loan money of £9,000. (5) That over a period of 20 years the board would not be called upon to levy 50 per cent of the sinking fund required. for repayment of £9,000 loan. (6) That works of a temporary nature would be paid for out of revenue.

A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Lee for the splendid work he had carried out in producing clear and comprehensive reports for the board regarding the estimates and reference was also made by board members to the good work performed by the office staff. .
