MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

STREET WIDENING. PRELIMINARY ACTION BEING TAKEN. The monthly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held last night. The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, presided and there were also present Councillors W. White, A. D. Low, W. H. Judd, W. Kemp, G. D. Wilson, R. Russell, H. E. Gardner, A. T. Jackson, G. W. Morice, J. Ninnes and C. E. Grey. The Maori War Effort organisation was granted permission to use the Park Oval on May 1 and to make a charge for admission. It was decided to replace trees in High Street and to plant a macrocarpa hedge against the Jawsoniana hedge along the southern boundary of the park. The council, on the advice of its solicitor, decided to pay a claim of £lO to the informant giving information regarding the theft of plants from the Park.

A petition from the residents of Makora Road asking that the road be straightened and tar-sealed was deferred for consideration at the estimates meeting. > The Borough Sanitary Inspector, Ma T. A. Russell, and the Borough Engineer, Mr C. R. Mabson, were thanked for their excellent reports covering the past year’s activities. Mr Jordan and Councillors Grey, White and Kemp paid tribute to their officers’ capabilities. Councillor White said that the town was a credit to them. The grass verges in the streets, it was stated, were an asset to the town. Reference was also made to the splendid work of all members of the council staff. Miss Betty Gray was appointed to the council’s clerical staff. Mr Mabson was instructed to take preliminary action to define the proposed straightening of Club Street so that the council might be in a position to close William Street.

The council decided to inspect the locality of the proposed street connections to Queen Street .at the south of Chapel and Dixon streets, on April 29.
