GREYTOWN COUNCIL CEMETERY CHARGES INCREASED. REHABILITATION PROPOSALS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Greytown Borough Council was held last night. There were present: The Mayor (Mr A. W. Horton), Councillors W. A. Tate, H. J. Farley, F. Wood, H. McKenna, and I. Blissett. Apologies for absence were received from Councillors E. Balfour and G. Eagar. The Mayor moved a vote of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr E. H. Trotman who had served as a councillor for some years, the motion being carried. The Works Committee recommended that users of the high pressure water in the seceded area who have not paid the annual charge for the year ended March 31, be given fourteen days’ notice that the supply will be discontinued unless the amount owing is paid within this period. The foreman reported that after checking the names on the list of persons supplied with high pressure water outside the borough, he had found two who were not being charged. The Cemetery Committee reported that it recommend the following increases in the cemetery charges:—(l) Prices for plots from £2 to £2 10s; (2) digging fees £1 15s to £2; (3) digging fees on Sundays and holidays to remain the same, viz., £3; (4) the sexton be employed one day per week for maintenance. The recommendations were approved. The building inspector reported on the repairs at present being carried out on the W.F.C.A. premises and recommend that the council only issue a temporary certificate. The building inspector’s report was adopted. TThe auditor general notified that he had examined the Borough Council accounts and had certified them as correct. The Director of Health wrote asking for a return of the public conveniences in the borough. The Papawai Tribal Committee wrote asking for a donation toward their funds. The council voted £2 2s. The Wairarapa Power Board forwarded £lO as the Greytown share of the board’s donation of £lOO to the All Purposes Appeal. The Wairarapa Hospital Board forwarded a list of proposed works and additions to hospitals. The council decided to raise no objection. The Mayor stated the works were all essential as the present hospital accommodation was overtaxed. Mr Hodder was appointed dangerous goods inspector for the borough. The Mayor reported that Mr Girling Butcher had made a trailer pump available for the Greytown Fire Brigade. This is to be available for use at a camp if required. In regard to the proposals for the rehabilitation of men returning from the war, the council decided to reply to the Rehabilitation Board stating that the council was of opinion that this was a national matter and to recommend that the following work be done by the Government: —(1) Rimutaka tunnels—one for the railway and one for vehicular traffic. (2) The draining of Lake Wairarapa. (3) The extension and construction of Western Lake Road fiom Featherston to Wainui-o-mata.
