Light Fall of Rain.

The drought conditions which have existed in the Wairarapa for some weeks were only slightly relieved by a light fall of rain yesterday afternoon. The rain was not sufficiently heavy to be of much benefit to pastures. Thirteen points of rain were registered at Solway.

Airmen Injured. An aircraft crashed near a South Island air station on Saturday morning during dual-flying training instruction, the occupants —Flying Officer Philip Robert Colfox Clark, Kohimaramara, Auckland, and Leading Aircraftman Keith Frederick Outtrim (Wellington) —receiving injuries. Flying Officer Clark was '-admitted to hospital and classified as seriously injured, but the injuries to L/Ac. Outtrim were classed as not serious.

A Bible and Sword Soldier. General Sir Bernard Montgomery, commander of the Eighth Army, may be included, along with General Sir William Dobbie, ex-Governor of Malta, among the “Bible and Sword” soldiers —men who are not ashamed as devout Bible readers and churchgoers, states the latest issue of the “Outlook.” General Montgomery, who always carries with him a copy of “Pilgrims Progress,” is a son of the late Bishop Montgomery, and a grandson of the famous Dean Farrar.

Inspection of Dairy Herds. A decision to ask the Government to tighten up inspection of all dairy herds in the Dominion was made by the Dominion Council of the Plunket Society in Christchurch on Saturday. Members also decided to ask the Government to make compulsory tubercular testing of dairy herds, diseased animals to be destroyed immediately and adequate compensation paid to the owners. The Government is also to be asked to introduce immediately measures to improve the standard of cleanliness of milk coming from farms and to enforce the existing regulations governing the sale of pasteurised milk.
