BOWLING

0 PARK CLUB. NOTES ON COMPETITIONS. (Contributed.) In the final of the champion singles in which H. Smith defeated R. Simpson 16/15, a very evenly contested game was witnessed. Throughout the major part of the game there were only one or two points difference in the scores, with Simpson' having a slight advantage from the 6th until the 16th end when the score board read 12 all, whilst on the 20th end the scores were again level at 15 all. Smith threw a long head for the last and drew two bowls just behind the kitty. Simpson having a third shot, elected to play a running shot with his last bowl, connecting with Smith’s shot bowls, one of which locked, leaving Smith one up. Simpson scored three threes, whilst of the total ends fifteen were won by singles. In the Wall Cup colts’ match in which Garard, McErlich, Edwards, Griffiths (Park) beat Freeman, Johnstone, Clayson, Beattie (Masterton), 26/7, the scores are no indication of the game, for, without exception, the heads were all compact, with Park gaining a slight advantage on the majority. Mr H. Smith, vice-president of the club, in calling for cheers for the visitors, expressed the hope that, next season i far more games would be played for the trophy, as the games in the past had always been popular with colts, who were afforded opportunities of playing in other than the orthodox positions in which first and second year players were placed. This, he contended, heightened their interest and keenness, whilst the inter-change of visits had further engendered the good fellowship which existed between the players of the two clubs. Mr Wall, the donor of the cup, was an interested spectator, and in presenting the cup to the skip of the successful team, congratulated both teams upon their good P lay> . The Kelley Cup colts game m which Griffiths and Edwards (s), Park, defeated the challengers, Adams and Hall (s), Carterton, 20/17, was a very interesting match. The scores were 6 all on the sixth end, but Park scored 12 cn the next six ends to lead 18/6 on the 12th. Carterton then took up the running to be only 3 down on the 18th, the board reading 19/16. The large gallery was entertained to some really good bowling. MASTERTON CLUB. CHAMPION CENTRE FOURS. (Notes by “The Bowler.”) A match for the Wairarapa Centre champion fours was played on Saturday last on the Masterton Club’s green between teams representing Masterton and Martinborough. Masterton were represented by J. Campbell, W. Reid, W. Hendry and H. N. Freeman (s), and Martinborough by Caseley, Budd, McNally and Boyd (s). The game was an interesting one up to the Bth head, but after that Masterton scored freely. Details of the play are as follow:— On the 4th head Masterton were leading by 2 points, but on the Bth head had a lead of only one point, the scores being Masterton 8, Martinborough 7. Masterton had increased their lead to 8 points on the 11th head, and on the loth head, the scores were Masterton 24, Martinborough 9. On the 18th head Masterton had a lead of 16 points, and on the final head the scoreboard showed, Masterton 27, Martinborough 14. At the conclusion of the game, Mr George Hayne, the president of the Wairarapa Centre, extended a cordial welcome to the visitors, and he knew that they had a happy and enjoyable afternoon. On Easter Saturday and Easter Monday the Masterton Club will hold a full two days tournament, and the committee will be pleased to receive entries. HOSPITALITY APPRECIATED. At the weekend a happy gathering took place in the club’s pavilion. To commemorate the winning of the club s single championship by Mr George Beecroft, Mrs Beecroft provided a dainty afternoon tea, which was much appreciated by all the bowlers present. Mr F. Roberts referred to the good bowls which Beecroft had played during the season, and stated that George’s win was a popular one. Mr Roberts, on behalf of club members, then thanked Mrs Beecroft for her kindness in supplying the afternoon tea. Mr Beecroft thanked Mr Roberts foi’ the kind sentiments expressed on behalf of the bowlers.
