BOWLING

■ 1 MASTERTON CLUB. CHAMPION SINGLES FINAL. (Notes by “The Bowler.”) An interesting match was played on the Masterton Club’s green yesterday afternoon when the final of the club s champion singles was decided. The finalists were George Beecroft and Walter Davies. There was a large number of bowlers present to witness the game and great interest was taken. The green was in excellent order and the weather conditions were perfect. Beecroft was the winner by a margin, of 11. points. On the actual play I might draw a comparison between the methods adopted by the two players., Beecroft was up to the head and a few' feet over, whereas Davies was playing the dead draw, and naturally at times was inclined to be a little short. The details of the game are as follow:—On the sth head Davies was leading by 3 points, but at the 10th head Beecroft was in the lead by 2 points, the scores being Beecroft 10, Davies 8. The game was still in an interesting stage at the 13th head, when Beecroft was in the lead by 4 points. Beecroft, however, increased his lead to 10 points at the 16th head, and the game was concluded on the 20th head when ■the final scores were: Beecroft 23, Davies 12 At the conclusion of the match, Mr H. Thomas, the club’s president, heartily congratulated both the winner and the runner-up on their fine performI must also add my congratulations to both Beecroft and Davies, as during the competition they have both played excellent bowls. It is a meritorious performance to got into the finals of the champion singles as there are so many players in the Masterton Club who would do splendidly even in the New Zealand championships.
