LEFT IN SHOCKING STATE
RACECOURSE AT CLAREVILLE. CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE ALLEGED. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr W. Howard Booth presided over a meeting of stewards of the Carterton Racing Cub last night at Carterton. The treasurer reported a dr. balance of £299. Tlie secretary reported that he had written to the Racing Conference in regard to the race day having been taken away from the Carterton Club. The Racing Conference wrote stating that owing to the club not being able to hold its race meeting it would not have a vote at the conference. Members generally considered that tne position was unsatisfactory and unjust. It was resolved that the secretary forward a strong protest to the conference regarding the voting power of the club at the conference. It was pointed out that it was no fault of the club that it had been disfranchised, the extraordinary circumstances of the war being responsible. It was resolved that the secretary make application for a permit to hold a race meeting on Saturday, September 11. The chairman said that the army had vacated the racecourse. Mr Smart reported that he had yesterday discussed with the Public Works engineer, the position in regard to the Careville racecourse and the latter had stated that the racecourse, buildings and fences would be put in a proper state of repair. Mr Booth said that the racecourse, buildings fences, etc., had been left in a shocking ’state. The Public Works engineer had told him that a start would be made on Monday next to clear away the rubbish Mr Booth stated that the cottage had been badly damaged, windows broken, and doors removed and taken away. Fences and posts were broken and in many instances it appeared as if they had been used for firing PU lt P °was resolved that the stewards meet on the course on Sunday morning, at 10 o’clock for the purpose of going into the matter, of the repairs. Members are asked to bring their lunch.
