BOWLING PATRIOTIC EFFORT. The Greytown Bowling Club held a progressive competition on Saturday and the entry fees amounting to over £l6 are to be given to the All-Pur-poses Appeal. The winner was S. Sommervill, and he handed the prize back to be donated to the fund. Twenty-four players took part and the financial result was most creditable. The semi-final and final of the fours competition was played at the weekend, J. Reid, H. McPhee, T. Connolly, and H. Carter (s) winning the final game against E. Maddison, J. F. Thompson, G. Brunton and F. Dennes (s), after a very fine even contest. On the 16th head Carter’s team were one up. Dennes secured the next three heads and was two up when the 19th head had been played. Carter secured two on the 20th head, and the score was 16 all. Both sides were playing good bowls and when the skips left the head Dennes was one up. Carter elected to run the shot bowl and made no mistake, taking out the shot and also the third bowl. Dennes tried for a trail and just missed by a fraction. Carter drew the shot dead with his last bowl and lay two. Dennes elected to try a running shot, but just missed a difficult shot by a fraction again. In the singles, N. McLeod defeated R. Thompson by two points in the semi-final. These two meet again in the final on even terms and a keen contest is expected. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs F. Kempton have returned to Greytown after having spent a holiday in Palmerston North and Wellington. Mr J. A. Karton, of Hamilton, is the guest of his sister, Mrs Hay, Humphrey Street.
